Practical Steiner Podcast - Episode One

Intro to Waldorf Education 0-7 years
4

Practical Steiner is a new podcast addressing the question “What might Steiner say?” about this or that topic that is of interest to me, the host. I am a fairly new Steiner student and have felt in these past two years that finally, after years and years of wondering about the “why” of many things, I have finally come across someone with comprehensive knowledge enough to answer many of those questions. I have longed for this all my life.

My primary interest lies at the interface of the guidance from Steiner’s books and lectures with how someone lives their everyday life.*

Today I talk with Cordelia about Steiner’s thoughts on the human being’s development from birth to seven years old. She provides an overview of what is Waldorf Education, with a focus on early childhood. These are some of the questions I ask within our conversation:

  • What is Waldorf Education & where did the name come from?

  • When does Waldorf Education begin?

  • What does a typical day look like at a Waldorf school for the young children?

  • Is there an overall “tenor” for how to talk to/treat the children?

  • Biggest differences in Waldorf vs. “regular” early childhood education?

  • When did you come across Waldorf/Steiner?

  • Did learning these ideas change how you dealt with your own children?

  • Is there punishment in Waldorf Education?

  • Are Waldorf schools only for rich kids?

  • “Etheric” is hard to grasp, can we talk about what it means?

*It may be useful to point out that this podcast is not presenting “expert” opinion/interpretation of Steiner’s body of work, and is in no way connected with any official Anthroposophical entity. That is the opposite of my interest. This podcast is conversations with various people - the more candid and honest the better - who have been studying at least as long as I have (~2 years) and who have taken up Anthroposophy as a way of living their lives.
